Wood & Wire’s hand-hewn approach to creating and making music reflects vital writing and instrumental contributions from all four band members: guitarist Tony Kamel fashions fierce solo licks to accompany his lead vocals; mandolinist Billy Bright provides a propulsive backbeat and exuberant treble lines; banjo virtuoso Trevor Smith peppers each song with intricate, swirling countermelodies; and bassist Dom Fisher undergirds it all with a joyful playing style that steadies the beat while adding buoyant embellishments in all the right places.  Together, through words and music, they find a distinctive sense of place that distinguishes them from other bluegrass and roots bands active today.

Catch Wood & Wire at the Sugar Maple Fest Friday, August 2.

Join us as we welcome Hubby Jenkins to the 16th annual Sugar Maple Music Festival! (Hubby was originally scheduled to play in 2018 but weather issues prevented him from getting to Madison on time.)

Hubby Jenkins is a talented multi-instrumentalist who endeavors to share his love and knowledge of old-time American music. Born and raised in Brooklyn he delved into his Southern roots, following the thread of African American history that wove itself through country blues, ragtime, fiddle and banjo, and traditional jazz. Hubby got his higher musical education started as a busker. He developed his guitar and vocal craft on the sidewalks and subway platforms of New York City, performing material by those venerable artists whose work he was quickly absorbing. An ambitiously itinerant musician, he took his show on the road, playing the streets, coffee shops, bars, and house parties of cities around the U.S.

After years of busking around the country and making a name for himself, Hubby became acquainted with the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Since 2010 he has been an integral part of the Grammy award winning Carolina Chocolate Drops and continues to make solo performances.

Just a few more hours to get your early-bird two day passes to the 15th Annual Sugar Maple Music Festival!  On sale here through May 31.

Mid-2017, The Tillers holed up at Candyland Recording Studio in Dayton, KY with producer Mike Montgomery (Jeremy Pinnell, The Breeders) and tracked ten new songs, live to 2” tape. The recordings showcase the diversity of their writing and musicianship, from hard-tackle thump to tender graceful melody – lightening-fast banjo to intricate guitar flat picking, plaintive fiddle, deep anchoring bass and clear tenor harmonies. Fueled by life, family, history, travel and politics, the new self-titled LP is the band’s most engaging record to date. Singer-songwriter-guitarist Sean Geil says of the new record, “This album is definitely more aggressive than past efforts. At our core we are still a traditionally rooted string band, but I’d say our punk rock roots are more visible on this album. And the addition of Joe Macheret on fiddle has added a new dynamic and allowed us to explore new territories as well as fill out the overall sound.”

Catch the Tillers at the Sugar Maple Fest Friday, August 3.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY,  Hubby Jenkins got his start as a professional musician busking around the country playing old-time American music. A talented songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, he plays guitar, mandolin, 5-string banjo, and bones.  During his travels he crossed paths with the Grammy Award winning Carolina Chocolate Drops and officially joined the group in 2010.

His solo performance showcases his passion for and knowledge of old-time traditional American music inspired by artists such as Charley Patton, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Blind Blake, and Skip James. To round all this off he shares honest and personal stories that give the audience a glimpse into this music’s rich and complex history as well as candidly highlighting the current political climate and need for social responsibility.

Catch Hubby at the Sugar Maple Music Festival on Saturday, August 4, 2018.
